a. Functional Fabric

HYFLEX (Water Proof & Highly Breathable Fabrics)

Products are conveniently 3-Layered with 2 high performance textiles which convert moisture to a vapor, making it water and wind proof. This durable fabric requires no lining, making it economically easy to wear.

HYTREL (Films in Waterproof, Windproof, Breathable Textiles )

General Description
Hytrel¨× is the DuPont registered trademark for its engineering thermoplastic elastomer. The polyether-ester block copolymers combine many of the most desirable characteristics of high performance elastomers and flexible plastics.

Hytrel¨× offers a unique combination of mechanical, physical, and chemical properties, which qualifies it for a number of demanding applications. The various grades of Hytrel¨× exhivit a wide range of flexibility/stiffness and processing capabilities.
Film Properties of Hytrel¨×
Hytrel¨× engineering thermoplastic elastomers offer a unique combination of strength, elasticity, and flexibility, without the use of plasticizers. By varying resin composition and hardness, appropriate physical properties can be attained as well as a broad range of moisture vapor transmission rates(MVTR).

Very thin monolithic films of 0.001 in or less can be extruded from Hytrel¨× these films can be prepared by melt casting(with or without carrier paper) or by blown film processing.

Hytrel¨× films transmit water vapor via an absorption, diffusion, desorbtion mechanism. In contrast to microporous structures, Hytrel¨× films have no holes that can become clogged. Hence, moisture vapor transmission rates remain high during end use, and comfort is not compromised. Although DuPont Does not manufacture thin films from Hytrel¨×, as a service to our customers, test data is provided on thin films made from selected grades(see Table 1).

Hytrel¨×Film/Fabric Laminates
Hytrel¨× films and bonded to textiles for both disposable and reusable application. Because the need to minimize costs is critical in disposable application, Hytrel¨× film is often extrusion coated directly onto nonwoven fabric. If the disposable end use requires a film adhesively bonded to a fabric, hot melts are an attractive way to achieve this at reasonable costs.

For reusable applications such as outdoor apparel, durability in use and in laundering are important criteria. For these, the
Hytrel¨× film generally needs to be laminated to one or more fabric layers with either aqueous- or solvent-based adhesives
Typical Applications
Film/fabric laminates of Hytrel¨× are finding increasing acceptance in end uses requiring waterproof, breathable, and windproof characteristics. Disposable application of Hytrel¨× film include operating room gowns and personal protective apparel. Reusable end uses include ski, snowboard, and hunting apparel. Included in these are inserts for gloves, either via the conventional cut and seam approach or by a revolutionary seamless, three dimensional route.

The increasing acceptance of Hytrel
¨× film is resulting in extensions into applications such as backpacks and bedding covers for allergy control.
Case Histories Ski and Snowboard Gloves
Waterproof, Breathable inserts made form Hytrel¨× films with high MVTR are finding increasing acceptance in these demanding applications. The inserts are either Hytrel¨× film adhesive laminated to fabrics(the laminate is cut and seamed to prepare the insert) or seamless and three-dimensional without any fabric. In the latter case, the inserts are dropped in between the outer fabric and the insulation. Tests have shown that glove inserts made with Hytrel¨× have higher MVTR than the leading microporous PTFE products. In addition, wind and water are kept out for exceptional warmth and dryness(see Figure 1)

Bed covers
Antiallergic mattress, quilt, and pillow covers consist of a cotton blend fabric laminated with a 25 um (1 mil) film of breathable Hytrel¨×. The covers provide an effective barrier to dust mite allergens in bedding while keeping the sleeper comfortable dry.

Test by the manufacturer have shown that the film of Hytrel
¨× is impermeable to microscopic dust mites and their allergenic particles. Dust mite allergens are major trigger factors for asthma, hay fever, and other allergic problems.

Made from a grade of Hytrel with high permeability to moisture vapor, the film allows evaporation and evacuation of sweat moisture faster than the skin exudes it. Tests of similar 25 um (1 mil) films show a MVTR of more than 10,000g/m2/day inverted test cup method, ASTM E96-BW.
The fabric/film laminate maintains its properties after repeated washings, according th research conducted by the manufacturer.
Protective Apparel

Workers in the nuclear industry and other fields stay cool in protective apparel made with a special grade of Hytrel Both single-use and reusable garments are available. Disposables are intended for wear in contaminated areas. They consist of 25 um (1 mil) of Hytrel¨× extrusion-coated on DuPont Sontara spunlaced fabric. Washable garments for use in clean rooms, etc., are a three-layer structure with a 25 um (1 mil) film of Hytrel¨×, a polyester copolymer substrate and a knit fabric.

Efficient evaporation of perspiration helps prevent heat stress. The grade of Hytrel
¨× used diffuses moisture faster than it can be exuded by the skin.

The flexibility and conformability or Hytrel
¨× permits coated or laminated structures with excellent drape and hand.

The protective layer of Hytrel¨× is monolithic(i.e., not microporous), and it resists attack by a wide range of chemicals. Proprietary electronic seaming technology prevents the entry of particulate dust, affording better protection than sewn garments, according to the manufacturer.
